Email setup in Vision 5.1

Postby RichardM » Thu May 19, 2011 2:40 pm

The company I work for uses Microsoft BPOS for our hosted exchange server and we are having trouble getting Vision to email reports to department managers and also emailing invoices to ourside vendors. Vision comes back with the error to start the TLS command to send, email failed to send. Has anyone had any success in doing this or is there a work around that can be used?

Your Exchange is requiring encryption and Vision doesn't support it. You'll have to talk to your Exchange Host to get access to an unencrypted SMTP port.

That's the sticking point, Microsoft is not, according to them, able to give me a usable SMTP server that is not secure. Thanks for the verifcation on the issue.

It doesn't necessarily have to go out of your Exchange server. You could have it relayed from another SMTP location.

We have multiple email servers setup, one for China office and one for our offices in the state. However the China office is unable to receive alerts generated through Vision because the email server noted on vision is our US email server. Is there a solution or idea that you can point me to?

Do the offices use different email domains, i.e. company-china.com, company-usa.com?

You could either allow email relaying from the Vision server or just supply a username and password for the email sender in Vision.

What account do you have setup as the Default Sender? What username are you using on the Email setup tab in Vision?

I like the relay idea. Set up a local sendmail server whose only job it is to receive emails from Vision and relay them to Exchange. Yes, it's an additional linkage in the email chain, one more moving part that you'll have to administer. But it lets you avoid doing anything complicated or custom in Vision or Exchange, and is pretty completely under your control.

Authorizing an IP to relay through Exchange is pretty easy with no need to run another service. I'd recommend that if you are the admin of the Exchange server, otherwise I'm with ggoodman.
