Change the path of files attached to a project.

Postby dchrestman » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:28 pm

Almost every project we have contains files that are attached to the project. The server that the files are stored on is due for replacement and the files will be moved to a new location. All of the files are stored in a specific folder named Vision Attachments. Once the files are moved they will not be accessible in Vision because the existing path will no longer exist. It appears the only way to change the path is to open each project and recreate a new path to the files.
Could a SQL script be crafted to make the path change, similar to the find and replace function in Word? Is there a function like this is SQL Server 2008?

Currently the path is something like this; \\Server1\Project Administration\Vision Attachments\2011-001-00\Vendor Invoice\filename.pdf
The new path will be something like this; \\Server7\\Vision Attachments\2011-001-00\Vendor Invoice\filename.pdf

Thanks,

Dirk

Sure, this would be a simple SQL statement but it's an update statement so it should be handled with caution. You may want to pull in someone with SQL experience and they will need access to your SQL server. The statement will look like this:

UPDATE Database.dbo.PRFileLinks
SET FilePath = REPLACE(FilePath, 'Server1\Project Administration\Vision Attachments', 'Server7\Vision Attachments')
WHERE FilePath LIKE '%Server1\Project Administration\Vision Attachments%';

Good luck!
