Upgrade and tier change

Postby gbirmingham » Fri Apr 01, 2016 10:22 am

Hi all, I have been looking through this forum as part of upgrading the company's Vision 6.1 SP4 to 7.5. I have seen some similar questions but not the same problem that I am experiencing. I reviewed the Deltek Vision v7.5 documentation but the install process is not upgrading the database. I thought I would get a community reaction before going to Deltek support.

I have had to build a new server for the Windows 2012 R2/SQL Server 2012 requirement of v7.5 and I have restored the Vision database (only) from the original database server to the new server. When I attempt to install Vision 7.5 on this new server, I am informed there is no database available to be upgraded as part of the install. I am concerned that if the database is not detected that trying to upgrade the database afterwards will have the same issue. Does anyone have any advice?

The main change to the setup I have made is to move from a 2-tier setup to a single tier setup. My plan is to have a multi-tier setup, however, I initially wanted to get the upgrade working on one internal server that has all roles and then make things exciting by adding an external web server (web/process roles only) after the internal users were satisfied with upgrade.

*** UPDATE: I proceeded with the v7.5 installation with only the demo database. I started Vision and logged in to demo database (didn't care for odd hyperlink view of demo data, logged in to confirm the system worked). The 6.1 database was restored and then I ran the C:\Program Files\Deltek\Vision\Databases\Scripts\DeltekVision75.sql against the restored 6.1 database, and then changed the database to the "upgraded" database using Weblink but now I when login I am prompted to upgrade the database from 6.1.600 to 7.5.0700.707.

Any suggestions as to why the database is not being recognized as upgraded? ***

Thanks,
Garrett

So you updated your SQL server to 7.5
Then manually upgraded your 6.1 database to 7.5 using the DeltekVision75.sql script. Did you get any errors when you did this?

The only thing I can think of is that you might be pointing to the wrong SQL Server in weblink.

Hi Boris, thank you for getting back to me. I ended up speaking to Deltek support last week and the issue was a rookie SQL mistake. After installing Vision 7.5 and then restoring the 6.1 database, I had not assigned the DeltekVision account with dbo on the restored database so when I ran the upgrade script it didn't actually upgrade the database (I mistook the Okay response in Studio manager that it had upgraded but it had only run the script with no result.) After making the permission change and then running the upgrade script, I received the successful upgrade message and I was able to login to Vision successfully.

My next step is to add a 2nd web server. The current setup has a single node with everything running. Now I want to add another web server with ARR proxy so that I can have an internal server for the office and an external web-only server for outside employees without a VPN requirement. I am reading up on that so if anyone has any gotchas they care to pass on that would be appreciated.

All,

The 2nd web server (web/application tier) went well. There was an issue with reports originally since the web and database/report server were on different domains. The solution was to configure local accounts that were the same on both servers for windows authentication even though SQL Authentication was the installation method that was being used. So far the upgrade has gone well. Next steps are the Touch and iAccess add-ons and possibly the DM module. DM requires a full SharePoint installation so may not proceed due to the number of internal changes we have to make to accommodate it.
