upgrade to sql server 2008 r2

Postby gandajohn » Wed Oct 01, 2014 7:41 pm

We want to upgrade our SQL Server software (on both our database and reporting servers) to 2008 R2.

We are currently running SQL Server 2008 and Vision 7.1.

I've determined that R2 is supported by 7.1. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Once the upgrade is completed successfully, Vision should work the same as before, correct?

Or, are their additional steps that need to occur after the SQL Server upgrade.

I just joined the board today for my own question but I'll take a stab at answering yours.

The only thing that might be an issue is if you are currently running in 32-bit mode because R2 versions are 64-bit.
So, if your server OS is say Windows 2008 (non-R2) then you may have an OS upgrade to tackle before you can update your DB.
Here's a good table to figure out what version of SQL you have now: http://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/

It is important to note that if your server is indeed 32-bit, moving to 64-bit requires a new install (you can't upgrade). When we moved to 64-bit we did side-by-side migrations and virtualized most of our servers in the process. Hope that helps.

Just doing a bit more research on this and it looks like you can indeed install SQL server 2008 R2 in a 32-bit OS. But there are some limitations you'll want to make sure you understand if you go that route. http://forums.asp.net/t/1549932.aspx?SQL+Server+2008+R2+64+bit+vs+32+bit
